2019 Metal Jewellery Open House

NIC Metal Jewellery student Johanna Richardson works on a ring in NIC’s Metal Jewellery Studio. Work from students will be on display and for sale as part of the Metal Jewellery Design Open House.

NIC Metal Jewellery students will display their work at the annual Metal Jewellery Open House, Wednesday, April 10 at the Campbell River campus.

“The open house is the culmination of everything they’ve learned throughout the program,” said Tracey Gibbons, NIC Metal Jewellery instructor. “It’s a chance for them to celebrate all the hard work they’ve done, showcase their art and sell their pieces to the public.”

The students will display the pieces created during the eight-month program, including earrings, necklaces, pendants and bracelets.

“The program has been amazing at teaching me not only how to make the art, but also how to promote my work and gain confidence as an artist,” said student Maia Bradfield.

The certificate teaches students to design and create metal jewellery pieces. While each student must produce certain pieces as part of their course work, the program also allows students to discover and explore their personal style.

“This program gave me the chance to explore my creativity and to get to learn hands-on,” said student Johanna Richardson. “I’m so glad I jumped on the opportunity to learn working with metal.”

The Metal Jewellery Design Open House is also an opportunity to tour NIC’s metal jewellery design studio, meet instructors and discover the specialized equipment and techniques available to students.

“I look forward to this event every year,” said Lynne MacFadgen, NIC’s regional director of continuing education and training. “It’s so wonderful to see the students tap into their passion and finish the program as accomplished artisans with a flair for promoting and selling their jewellery.”

Along with the eight-month program, NIC also offers studio workshops throughout the year which are open to the public.

“The workshops are a great opportunity to begin to explore working with metal or learn a particular technique,” said Gibbons.

The Metal Jewellery Open House runs from 1 to 3 pm on Wednesday, April 10 at NIC’s Campbell River campus, room D209.
