Fire damages four small buildings at NIC Comox Valley

Fire damaged four Annex buildings at the NIC Comox Valley campus in the early hours of June 15.

A fire has damaged four small buildings at the North Island College campus in the middle of the night.

Courtenay Fire Department responded to the scene after 3 a.m., on June 15, where the fire was underway at an area known as the Village portables.

One classroom and three small buildings in the Village Annex are currently closed until further notice because of fire damage.

The fire is currently under investigation.

“We are grateful that there have been no reports of injuries,” said Colin Fowler, Vice President, Finance & College Services. “We want to thank the Courtenay Fire Department for their quick response, which ensured the fire was contained to the Village.”

Once the site was secured, NIC began the process of contacting staff and students and working to support any operational issues resulting from the fire.

“Any time an unexpected event happens to our community, it has the potential to be disruptive,” added Fowler. “We are working to support those whose used the affected spaces and ensuring that all community members are supported.”

Today’s graduation ceremony in Campbell River will not be affected.
