NIC and VIU students join together for literary reading

Join NIC’s English department Wednesday, March 29 for literary readings by NIC and VIU students.

The evening will open with a reading by Natalie Nickerson, the Comox Valley's new Poet Laureate and proud NIC and VIU grad.

Readings will include poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction by students published in Portal, VIU’s annual literary magazine as well as fiction by NIC’s English 209 class.

“I am really proud of the level of writing that has come out of this class,” said NIC instructor Judy LeBlanc. “We are thrilled to have VIU join us and look forward to hearing them read from their new magazine.”

Among the VIU student readers will be Lorin Medley, a past NIC student who has gone on to study creative writing part-time at VIU. In addition to poetry and short stories published in Portal magazine, she has been published in The Puritan, won the 2014 Islands Short Fiction Contest and was long listed for the 2016 Prism International Poetry Contest.

“I'll be reading a poem included in this year's Portal magazine, a tribute to my old friend Ray Crossley,” said Medley. “It’s been a few years since I studied at NIC but the English faculty continue to be great supporters of my writing, showing up for readings and encouraging me to keep going.”

With NIC and VIU's Dual Admission partnership, students can complete first and second-year courses at NIC before transferring to third year at VIU. From creative writing and English to anthropology, history, psychology and sociology, NIC students can choose from 17 majors and 26 minors when transferring from NIC to a Bachelor of Arts at VIU.
