NIC’s School of Fine Arts and Design will host respected artist and teacher Clive Powsey at NIC’s Comox Valley campus on Feb. 8.

Powsey is the second speaker in NIC’s 2018 Artist Talk Series, a five‐part event bringing distinguished local and international artists to the college.

Series coordinator and NIC instructor Sara Vipond said the series aims to give students and the local arts community a chance to meet successful artists and learn about their art practice.

“Clive is a wonderful addition to this series,” said Vipond. “His breadth of experience in the world of painting, drawing and animation is a valuable resource not only for students, but anyone interested in art.”

Powsey was born in Ashford, Kent, in the U.K. He studied drawing, painting and printmaking at the Ontario College of Art, spending his last year of studies in Florence, Italy.
Powsey has exhibited in solo and group shows since 1981. His acclaimed watercolour paintings have been seen around the world and have won multiple awards.

Powsey also worked in animated film and television from 1985 to 2016 as an art director and background artist for companies like Walt Disney Animation Canada and the award-winning animation studio Nelvana Ltd.

His credits include various television series and specials, theatrical releases, direct-to-video movies, commercials, animated shorts and special projects like painted backgrounds for the IMAX/OMIMAX animated short Journey to The Planets and The Dark Years, a National Film Board documentary co-production.

As an instructor, Powsey taught courses on drawing and painting at the Ontario College of Art (1988-92) and in background painting and design at Max the Mutt Animation School (1999-2003) in Toronto. He currently teaches a course in drawing and rendering and a course in design fundamentals in the Metal Jewelry Design program at NIC.
Powsey has focused on printmaking and has had three solo exhibitions on Vancouver Island during the last five years. He is currently working on a new exhibition for later in 2018.

Powsey will deliver his talk at the Stan Hagen Theatre from 6 to 7 pm, with doors opening at 5:30 pm. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
The NIC Artist Talk series previously featured Rick Leong on January 18. Upcoming talks include Rande Cook (Feb. 22), Nadine Bariteau (March 8) and Brendan Tang (March 22) at the Stan Hagen Theatre.
