Port Alberni graduation postponed

The graduation planned for the Port Alberni campus on June 13 has had to be postponed due to fire and road concerns.

As a result of the ongoing fire at Cameron Bluffs, NIC has decided to postpone the Port Alberni Graduation, originally scheduled for next Tuesday, June 13.

The fire has forced the closure of Highway 4, which connects Port Alberni and West Coast communities to Qualicum and the east side of the Island. While an emergency detour is available for essential traffic only, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure estimates damage to Highway 4 and instability of the slope above the highway means this closure will likely last beyond the fire itself.

Our hearts go out to all students in the Alberni-Clayoquot region who were looking forward to the graduation ceremonies. While we want to honour your journey, we are unable to fully celebrate at this time. We hope to celebrate again when community resources are not hampered by the road closures, and community members are able to fully celebrate with us.

We look forward to celebrating you, and all Port Alberni graduates, this fall. More information on a date will be announced once a future date is selected.

If you do not feel that you will be able to attend a fall ceremony, please email Darin Bellham, Associate Registrar, Enrolment Service and Admissions at darin.bellham@nic.bc.ca.
