Connecting Communities through Research

NIC's applied research and scholarly activities allow NIC and its community partners to provide new understandings of regional issues and create opportunities for students and communities alike.

Together, we bring the people and communities of Vancouver Island together with their academic institutions on the issues that are relevant to them.

Research

The Research Steering Committee explores, evaluates, and prioritizes opportunities for collaborative and community-based scholarly activities and applied research. It focuses on research that develops the region's social, human, and economic well-being and research relevant to the scholarship of teaching and learning.

The committee is open to partnering with appropriate businesses, community groups, non-profit agencies, government departments, and other educational institutions, such as the Vancouver Island Community Research Alliance (VICRA) to achieve its goals.

To discuss possible partnerships, contact Research Steering Committee chair John Marton or Jan Carrie, NIC's Vice President, Education.

NIC is proud to be a part of VICRA link opens in a new window, an island-based research alliance between Vancouver Island's five public post-secondary institutions.

Ethics Procedures

All research undertaken at, or under, the auspices of North Island College involving human participants requires ethical review and approval before data collection begins, in accordance with NIC Policy 1-12.

How to Apply: Researchers must complete and submit the relevant research approval worksheets electronically to John Marton, the chair of the Ethics Review Board, early so that reviews can take place prior to data collection.

Do I Need Ethics Approval? Course instructors may approve student assignments that are of minimal risk, and involve no deception or vulnerable participants. To determine if your class assignment needs Ethics Review Board approval, refer to the Form 1-12 B, the Student Project Approval Worksheet.
