Vancouver Island family owned and locally managed Berwick Retirement Communities has created an award with the North Island College Foundation to help support students in the Practical Nursing Program.
Berwick Retirement Communities owners, Victoria-based father and son team Gordon and Chris Denford have donated $15,000 for an endowment fund. It will be available to a full-time student graduating from the Practical Nursing Program, who has excelled in PNP 162 Gerontology Practicum II (as determined by faculty), and demonstrated care and compassion with seniors either in a work or volunteer capacity. This award is in keeping with the Denford’s vision of offering the highest quality care to seniors in the community.
Comox Valley community members will be familiar with the beautiful Berwick facility, nestled right in the heart of Comox. “Berwick Comox Valley is a wonderful addition to the region and the Denford’s generosity to the College is a testament to their community support and their commitment to caring for seniors”, says Dr. Lou Dryden, President of North Island College.
The Berwick Retirement Communities endowment is a gift offered to students in perpetuity. The donated funds are invested, with only the interest earned being awarded annually. The Denfords’ have also donated a $500 cash award for a student enrolled this year who meets the criteria.
“Since May when we opened Berwick Comox Valley we have received an incredibly warm welcome”, says Gordon Denford, President & CEO, Berwick Retirement Communities. “We are proud to be contributing to our community by supporting North Island College nursing students. We feel an excellent education is of vital importance in serving our seniors, and aspiring professionals in our industry.”
