New Learning Opportunities to Enrich Your Lifestyle

Cynthia FurkAre you looking to explore new interests or develop your job skills? Then look to Cynthia Furk - North Island College’s new face in Continuing Education.

As Continuing Education Programmer, a newly created position at Port Hardy campus, Furk is dedicated to coordinating new workshops, recruiting Continuing Education instructors, and scheduling a wide range of personal and professional interest classes and workshops for the community.

An islander all her life, Furk grew up in Nanaimo, spent years in Victoria, and moved to Port Hardy from Lake Cowichan in December. She has followed her own love of learning in a number of directions, from broadcasting and media to recreation administration.

“Education can take you anywhere with your life,” says Furk. “Sharing that passion for learning is one of the things that attracted me to a career in education. And the opportunity to help others learn is what brought me to Port Hardy.”

“I’m looking forward to getting a lot of new classes going that are interesting and relevant to the community. I have a few ideas in progress, but encourage people to bring forward their suggestions as well.”

Cynthia also points out that Continuing Education provides a unique opportunity for teaching. “New classes call for new instructors. We’re always looking for people who are willing to share their skills and lead a workshop. No teaching experience is necessary, just a genuine interest in helping others learn. It could be that you know how to rebuild an engine, do a home renovation project or are proficient at French cooking. The possibilities are endless.”

This spring, residents can choose from personal interest classes, including painting, photography, yoga, and web page design, as well as job-related training such as First Aid, computer training, and Foodsafe. To register, or for a complete listing of courses, dates and times, call 949-7912.

To suggest ideas for future classes, contact Cynthia Furk at NIC’s Port Hardy campus by phone at 949-2872 or email: cynthia.furk@nic.bc.ca.
