North Island College Students Showcase Careers in Adventure

Vancouver Island is Canada’s hub for marine-based, eco- and adventure tourism and the fastest growing sector of British Columbia’s tourism industry. The Coastal Adventure Tourism program, at North Island College, is celebrating its tenth year of providing an exciting way to train for work as a guide in this prominent resource and service industry.

The College’s second year Adventure Tourism Diploma students and faculty are hosting two’ Information Nights’ to provide prospective students, career and secondary school councillors, and industry employers, with more information about this unique program. The first Information Night will be held in the Theatre, GWG 201, at the Campbell River Campus on April 25th from 7 to 9 PM. The second ‘Information Night’ will be held, April 26th, at the Courtenay Campus Room TYEE 203, from 7 to 9 PM. Each evening will include presentations from instructors and students as well as information on registration, entry requirements, and funding options. There will be opportunities to interact with current and past students and faculty, Door Prizes, slide shows and refreshments will be served.

“I see this program equipping guides with the skills to deal with guests holistically” said Tracy Sinclair, owner of Quadra Island Kayaks. “As a guide you are ‘at work’ for 24 hours a day with guests and North Island College students are prepared to manage risk, deal with challenges, prepare feasts, and be storytellers, councillors, and jesters. Those people are confident that getting on the water on our coast is fulfilling for everyone and it shows.”

According to Program Coordinator Dave Pinel, “The Coastal Adventure Tourism Program is highly experiential with relevant training in sea kayaking, canoeing, sailing, sport fishing, powerboat operations, and wilderness first aid.” In addition the program provides a more comprehensive view of the Adventure Tourism industry, tourism services and employment opportunities. “We also spend a significant amount of time on multi-day trips on the west coast of Vancouver Island, and exploring the uniqueness of the Discovery Islands, the Gulf Islands, and other coastal areas.” says Pinel. For more information about the Information Nights you can contact Dave Pinel 923-9798 or email him at David.Pinel@nic.bc.ca.
