THE FIRST GRADUATING CLASS
North Island College – Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design Partnership

First Crop – is an appropriate name for the fine arts show opening at the Comox Valley Art Gallery on Friday, May 11, 2007, featuring 12 graduates of Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design - North Island College. The students, the first graduates from the NIC-ECIAD partnership, will be showing a variety of stunning work.

Anh Le, Shelley Combs, Jill Banting, Samantha Garstang, Marjorie Sorfleet, Ja Witcombe, Heli Garcia, Judith Koeleman, Simon Thompson, Dallas Steveson, Kristin Russell, and Grace Wolff will graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts this spring with one of the graduation requirements being a public art show. The Comox Valley Art Gallery will be the venue with the show opening May 11th.

Drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, photography, printmaking, and ceramics are all part of the variety of media that will be on display. Each artist has provided a brief statement of their work - will be in attendance the night of the opening to speak with guests. To see a peek preview of the artists’ work visit www.firstcrop.ca.

“The caliber of work these graduates are producing speaks volumes to the quality of the partnership between NIC and ECIAD”, says Dr. Lou Dryden, President of NIC. “Lots of time and effort were devoted to putting this partnership in place; when you see the pride and the quality of the work of the graduates you know that it was well worth the time and effort both institutions put into making this unique partnership such a success”.

The First Crop show will run through May 19 and is open to the public. The Comox Valley Art Gallery, located at 580 Duncan Avenue in downtown Courtenay, is a beautiful venue for the show.
