STUDENTS TACKLE NUMBERS AT NIC

Twenty students from Comox Valley and Port Alberni schools spent May 3 at North Island College, tackling numbers while participating in the final round of the BC. Colleges High School Mathematics Contest. The contest is organized into two levels: a junior level for Grades 8, 9, and 10; and a senior level for grades 11 and 12. Two rounds are written, a preliminary round at local schools and the final round at North island College, Comox Valley Campus. The preliminary round of exams took place early in March and gave students a taste of the quirky and tough questions to expect.

The final round lasted two hours after which the students enjoyed a tour of the Science Labs at the college, lunch at the cafeteria, and a talk by local retired teacher Colin Park, titled "Can Math be Infinitely Interesting?" Cash prizes were awarded at the end of the day to the top three Senior and Junior students.
