Apprenticeship students in North Island College’s Heavy Duty & Commercial Transport Mechanics Program are excited to be working with a new piece of equipment – a 2000 Freightliner truck valued at approximately $20,000-$25,000.
The new truck was a must have for the program as it enables students to work on a modern dual circuit and ABS (anti-lock) air braking system, modern truck alignment, among other systems. The truck was purchased from Lomack Transportation in Prince George.
According to Don Gillingham, NIC Dean of Trades, Technical and Tourism programs, the truck will provide a very effective training aid for the program. “At NIC we pride ourselves on providing practical hands-on training that matches the real world”, says Gillingham. “A Heavy Duty Mechanic or Commercial Transport Mechanic would work on a vehicle such as this one. When students leave our program and head into the work force they have experience working with equipment that they will find on the job”.
North Island College’s Heavy Duty & Commercial Transport Mechanics Program is an eight-month program located at the College’s Vigar Road Centre in Campbell River. It prepares you for jobs such as working with heavy duty equipment; truck and bus dealerships, truck, bus or equipment repair shops; or logging, mining and construction companies.
The program starts in September each year and is quite popular taking in only sixteen students each year. Instructor Glen Roberts noted that the new truck will be a great addition to the fleet.
