NIC GRADUATES ITS FIRST BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION STUDENTS

Heather Buchanan and Daryl Robbins, BBA GradsNIC students Daryl Robbins and Heather Buchanan don’t have much time to think about their upcoming graduation ceremony on June 22nd because they are both busy working! Daryl is in orientation training with CIBC Driftwood Mall Branch as their new Manager of Small Business. Heather, who is working for a contractor, has just started her new business consulting company called ‘Dynamic Consulting and Business Services’.

As NIC’s first graduates of the Bachelor of Business Administration degree, Daryl and Heather are keen to share their insights about NIC. “Being able to complete the BBA right here in the community was incredible”, says Daryl. “I did not have to relocate which I thought I was going to have to do after completing the Business Administration Diploma”. Heather echoes Daryl’s appreciation and adds, “With a seven year old daughter and four year old son, moving would have been a big challenge, being able to complete my degree here, with my parents close at hand, was wonderful”.

For North Island College having the first BBA graduates cross the stage to get their parchments is a significant benchmark. This is the College’s first stand alone degree, starting and ending at NIC. Vice President, Education, Dr. Martin Petter, shares the sense of excitement and achievement: “North Island College has several degree programs it offers in collaboration with other institutions such as our Bachelor of Science in Nursing in partnership with Malaspina University College or the Bachelor of Fine Arts through Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, but our Bachelor of Business Administration is our product from developing the curriculum, to getting it through the approval bodies, to admitting students. It is very gratifying to see our first graduates”.

Daryl is looking forward to his new job with CIBC starting on April 30th where will be assisting small business with an integrating banking approach to financial planning. Heather’s new company, Dynamic Consulting and Business Services, has just launched. It will deal with most aspects of business service including bookkeeping, market research, and tax research. “My business cards are just being printed or I would give you one”, laughs Heather. “But just so you know the phone number is 338-3983 and we are open for business”.

When asked what advice they would give to students considering enrolling in the degree program both Daryl and Heather offer the same words of advice – stick with it – it is worth it. Daryl is quick to add, “the faculty are very supportive and go out their way to keep students informed and communication flowing”.
