The Hospitality Industry in British Columbia is facing a great shortage and demand for trained cooks and chefs. It is a perfect time to get involved and enter the exciting career in the Culinary Arts at North Island College. A new model has been developed from a collaborative of industry chef’s and college instructors. This new format will allow students the opportunity to “earn while they learn” and gain valuable industry experience within the program at the same time as cutting back on costs incurred for their training.
The Culinary Arts Program at North Island College will host two information sessions to provide prospective students, career & secondary counselors, funding agencies and industry employers with an overview of the new model. The first session will be held on Tuesday June 12th from 6 to 8 pm at the Campbell River NIC campus, Third Course Bistro. The second session is scheduled for Monday June 18th from 6 to 8 pm at the Comox Valley NIC campus, Stan Hagen Theatre.
Come out and meet the instructors and industry chefs to gain insight into both the program and the many opportunities that exist in the Culinary Arts. This informative session will cover topics such as; Career Path Opportunities, Apprenticeship Opportunities, Culinary Arts Program Training Model, Apprenticeship Opportunities for Secondary School Students, Earn While You Learn & Links with Employers.
“Culinary was something I had been thinking about doing for a few years. Only after traveling for a bit and some really bad days at my job did I decide to go back to school, and it is one of the best decisions I could have made. The chefs are great and the others students are a blast. It is great being excited to go to school. After the program, I should have no problems finding a job anywhere I travel to, not to mention it might come in handy for the Olympics in 2010.” Bryan Crerar, graduating student 2006.
According to industry chef’s and faculty of the Culinary Arts Program, the new training model is effective in its design with industry involvement, is student career path driven through relevant training and leads to apprenticeship certification.
