DRYDEN APPOINTED TO BUSINESS COUNCIL
North Island College President, Dr. Lou Dryden, was recently appointed to serve, as a representative of the post-secondary education sector, on the Business Council of British Columbia’s Board of Governors.
The Business Council of British Columbia, established in 1966, is an association representing approximately 210 large and medium-sized enterprises engaged in business in British Columbia. The Business Council actively engages in education and training issues, given its interest in meeting the workforce requirements of BC employers. In addition to conducting research and suggesting policy directions related to the efficiency and responsiveness of the education system, the Business Council hosts an annual Skills Conference, which focuses on addressing skills shortages and the engagement of youth, aboriginals and immigrants in the workforce.
Looking ahead to serving on the Board, Dr. Dryden sees a natural fit between the work of the Business Council and the post-secondary system, particularly colleges. He notes that colleges act as economic development agents for business and local communities, producing employees that are job-ready for the trades, service, technical and technology sectors. “Addressing the skills shortages are what colleges are all about, and by working directly with industry, we can respond quickly to meet the needs of BC employers,” explains Dryden.
Dr. Dryden’s appointment takes effect immediately, expiring in 2009.
