North Island College Philosophy Instructor, Jeff Lawrence, will host the Fall 2007 edition of the Philosopher’s Film Series beginning September 27th, which will have participants viewing and discussing Krzysztof Kieslowski’s The Decalogue.
Superlatives abound when describing The Decalogue, a series of ten one-hour dramas originally made for Polish TV between 1988 and 1989.
“Though each episode is inspired by one of the Ten Commandments of the Bible, these are not Sunday school fables illustrating some simplistic moral lesson – the connections to the individual commandments are not always obvious and are often downright curious – but powerful, profound stories of love and loss, faith and fear. Kieslowski explores ordinary people flailing through inner torments, hard decisions, and shattering revelations, grounding his stories in the faces of their deeply human characters.” – Sean Axmaker
Lawrence, in his sixth year of teaching at North Island College, started the Philosopher’s Film Series five years ago when he decided to screen some relatively obscure films that had relevance to philosophical issues that he was covering in his classes. Initially limited to students, the college gradually opened the Series up to members of the public, and to his surprise he found “there was a genuine appetite within the community for viewing and discussing these thought-provoking works of art.”
Screenings will be held on the following dates, beginning at 7:00 pm in the Stan Hagen Theatre at North Island College’s Comox Valley Campus:
Everyone is welcome to attend and admission is free. For further information, please contact Jeff Lawrence directly at 334-5000 ext 4030 or visit www.nic.bc.ca.
