Mark your calendars. North Island College is pleased to announce that award winning poet and playwright, Cornelia Hoogland, will be reading from her recent works at NIC’s Port Alberni, Campbell River and Comox Valley Campuses.
A professor with the Faculty of Education at the University of Western Ontario, Cornelia recently moved back to Vancouver Island which is her home.
Cornelia is the author of four books and her poetry has been published in literary journals, locally in magazines such as: Prairie Fire, The New Quarterly, Poetry Canada, Fiddlehead Quarry, and the Malahat Review; and internationally in Poetry Australia, Parnassus Literary Journal (USA), Verse (Scotland), and Prairie Schooner (USA). Her poems have also appeared in a number of anthologies and her work has aired on radio and been performed on stage.
In choosing Hoogland’s long poem Little Red Meets the Wolf in the Woods as the 1st place winner of the 2007 Lichen Arts and Letters Serial Poet competition, Tim Lilburn says of her work, “The precision of writing in this series is arresting, the poet managing to render what is almost nameless, the feel of a look. But what is most admirable is that little of what is caught with such sensorial precision is wanted. The enjambment of engagement and repulsion is dizzying.”
Cornelia’s poem Crow’s Lament was also chosen as the 2nd place winner in Prairie Fire’s 2006 poetry competition. In addition, she is the 2005 winner of the Basmajian Chapbook Competition and the 1st place winner of Other Voices 2005 poetry competition. Selection of Cuba Journal (2003), as well as her second and third books of poetry, You Are Home (2001) and Marrying the Animals (1995), and most recently Crow (2007), were all shortlisted for the national CBC Literary Awards.
The readings are open to the public and there is no charge to attend. North Island College gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and The League of Canadian Poets in bringing Cornelia to the North Island. Cornelia will focus on Gravelly Bay and Little Red Meets the Wolf in the Woods during the readings.
