Governor General Academic Medal: My Nguyen, Global Tourism & Hospitality Management Advanced Diploma, Sustainable Tourism
Lieutenant Governor Medal Program for Inclusion, Democracy and Reconciliation:
I am from the Ojybwa Nation but currently reside in the Unceded Traditional Territory of the K’òmoks First Nation. I am pursuing my BBA in Accounting and I plan to pursue my CPA accreditation after I complete my degree with my long-term plan of using my CPA in the non-profit sector. I currently serve as a student representative on NIC’s Education Council, Planning and Standards Committee, and other areas both on and off campus that recognize diversity, inclusion, and Reconciliation. I aim for a world where no one should feel they are not good enough to successfully achieve their dreams, no matter what obstacles the world places in front of them.

I am NITESH CHAUDHARY, International student in NORTH ISLAND COLLEGE, Comox Valley. I graduated from the Tourism and Hospitality program in 2019. As a student and as a part of community I feel proud that I’m serving communities with core of my heart and with full energy, and I always try to engage people and communities. My father always says “community is your unity,” and I always try to support this unity and work for this unity. As I’m always with our communities whenever and wherever they need me.

Jenny Sawatzky returned to school in 2017 as a mature student, several decades after she had graduated from high school and married her high school sweetheart. In early life, Jenny invested her energy into her marriage, her family, and building a successful accounting business from the ground up. After decades of imagining a return to school—and instead of retiring— Jenny finally had the opportunity to pause and reflect on what inspires her most deeply. She chose to wrap up her business and attend NIC as a full-time student within the Social Work Program. While at NIC, Jenny dedicated herself both to her studies and to the well-being of her fellow students, including through representation of students on the NIC Board of Governors. She put her heart into the adventure of learning and sharing, and is profoundly grateful and excited to use her newly honed skills in her community.

President’s Award for Academic Excellence:
Kyle Gus is a hardworking student who is always open to learning and trying new ideas in ways that build his skills and knowledge as he continues his bike ride of learning. His determination and commitment serve him well. He demonstrates the potential to achieve whatever academic goal he chooses. His participation and contributions to the campus are valued. His manner in the classroom makes the classroom a better place for learning. With support and encouragement of peers and instructors he persisted and overcame discouragement early on. In the face of setbacks, he willingly asked, “What do I need to do better?” and was responsive to the feedback He conducts himself in a respectful manner as a student and has gained a sense of mastery in himself as a learner. His contributions to the classroom greatly impact the quality of the learning environment for others. His smiling face and gentle tone make him a pillar in creating a safe place to learn for all present. He contributes to making his classes a better place to learn and he demonstrates a quiet leadership that models how we should treat each other with kindness and respect. He is a valued leader of any classroom by making it a better place to learn as all learners progress toward their goals and dreams. His instructors cannot say enough about how much Kyle did to grow personally and how he supported others in their learning. His perseverance has led him to acceptance into the Bachelor of Business Administration, Marketing Major Program with completion of his Adult Dogwood on the way. Peter was born and raised in Calgary, the tradition territory of the Tsuut’ina, Siksika and Stoney Nakoda nations, and moved to Port Alberni, Hupacasath and Tseshaht First Nations territory, with his young family in 1986. He retired after a 30 year career in Health Safety and Environmental management, and was looking for a way to contribute to the community. The HSW program at North Island College presented the opportunity to build a solid foundation for community service work. Peter is grateful for the support and encouragement of his instructors and classmates throughout the past year.

I will be heading to UVic this fall to continue my Bachelor of Science majoring in biology. Afterwards, I plan to pursue the field of medicine. It has been a joy to study at North Island College these last few years and I have learned a tremendous amount of information and for that I am thankful.

I grew up in the Comox Valley, graduating from Highland Secondary as the recipient of the Governor General's Bronze Medal, and I am proud to now graduate from NIC. The School of Business, through industry-specific courses and the co-op program, has provided me the tools I need to succeed and offered me the opportunities that have launched my career. The experience and relationships I have developed at NIC will follow me throughout my life, and I am honored to be this year’s recipient of the President’s Award for Academic Excellence.

Nicolle is a three-time college drop out who attributes a large part of her success to the many times her friends, family, classmates, instructors, and faculty support staff helped to talk her off the ledge. She would like to take the opportunity to thank the college for this recognition and to celebrate North Island College's graduating class of 2020. To her comrades in the BSN cohort, who persevered and earned their place on the (virtual) stage today, she would like to share the following message: "Your ability to support and challenge members of your team is a testament to your integrity and the endless potential you have to drive growth and reform throughout your career.
