North Island College is honoured to acknowledge the traditional territories of the combined 35 First Nations of the Nuu-chah-nulth, Kwakwaka’wakw and Coast Salish traditions, on whose traditional and unceded territories the College’s campuses are situated.

President’s Awards for Academic Excellence
Jonathan Wiersema, Human Services – Educational Assistant/Community Support, Indigenous Focus Certificate
Jonathan Wiersema joined the NIC Indigenous Focus Community Support Worker program from the comfort of his garden home in Sointula on Malcom Island, in the traditional territories of the Kwakwaka’wakw. Jonathan feels like the pandemic of 2020/21 was a blessing, as he was able to participate in a program usually only offered in person on campus. He found the program exciting and a challenge, having been a long while since high school, but one he navigated with skill and ability. Jonathan has had the opportunity to support individuals through challenging life experiences and believes it is a calling to which he is uniquely suited. He looks forward to applying the knowledge he gained through the program to his future work within the North Island community. To him, winning the Presidents Award is a powerful and beautiful acknowledgement of his aptitude for the path he has chosen.

Robyn was drawn to a career in health care after experiencing firsthand the care and compassion shown towards her family during the end of life care her father received. "It was so welcomed to have such a positive experience during such a difficult time in my life. I wanted to be that positive experience in someone’s life.” Adapting to the online learning platform had its challenges but overall, it was a very rewarding and enriching experience. She was extremely surprised to learn she had received this award. “It was a great way to finish off the school year, and a great way to start off my new career as a Community Health Worker for Island Health.”
Dawn Harris, Human Services Diploma
Dawn is honoured to be the recipient of the President Award for Academic Excellence.
She is very grateful for the many connections and supports made from the instructors at North Island College, fellow students, and within the community. Dawn has shown with perseverance and dedication you can achieve whatever you put your heart into.
Being a mother of four, coming back as an adult learner she had the unique opportunity of attending North Island College with her two eldest children. The past two years hold great memories for her, and she looks forward to pursuing her passions towards a BSW.
Erika Petrie, Human Services Diploma
"My journey at NIC started out of a desire to continue my education and help people. My job as a tutor encouraged me to take the Human Services certificate, and after getting my EA/CSW Certificate I decided to continue and complete my diploma. With the love and support of my family, including my husband and two young sons, I managed to complete my diploma this year days after welcoming a third son into the world.
I am so thankful for the amazing teachers I have met in my four years at NIC completing my diploma, and to the amazing Human Services Department for doing everything they could to ensure that I was able to succeed to my very best. I will be spending the next year on maternity leave but plan to continue my education and eventually complete my Bachelor’s Degree in Child and Youth Care."
Kristi Inman, Social Service Diploma
Kristi was born and raised on the unceded territory of the K'ómoks First Nation. In her first career she worked as a Registered Biology Technician. After working in this field for many years an unexpected workplace accident abruptly ended her career. This devastating accident stopped her whole life and forced her to reflect about what to do next and who she wanted to be. This was no easy process. After going through back surgery and seriously struggling with depression and anxiety, Kristi decided she wanted to help others with similar struggles and make a difference in as many lives as possible. She chose the NIC Social Service Diploma to start that journey. She worked hard in school and is honoured to receive the President’s Award at NIC. She wants those who struggle with mental health conditions and physical challenges to know that they are strong and to never give up hope, you can succeed!

When I began my journey at North Island College, I wanted to enroll in the Bachelors of Business Administration Marketing Major Program. However, due to academic difficulties I faced in high school, I was required to upgrade a total of seven math courses and one English course. This initially shook my confidence. However, with the help of all of North Island Colleges incredible resources, such as the Peer Tutoring Program as well as math and English support in the Comox Valley Campus Library, I was able to complete this upgrading within a year and I was admitted into the Business program. Due to this challenging start, receiving the President’s Award upon graduation means the world to me. But I have to say I would not have been able to do it without all the incredible help and patience of North Island Colleges faculty and my peers who tirelessly helped me along the way. I believe this supporting environment is something very unique and special about North Island College, and it is something I am very grateful for.
Sandra Hervieux, Bachelor of Science in Nursing
It was an honour for Sandra to be able to study at North Island College on the unceded traditional territories of the K’ómoks First Nations, and to be selected for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Studying in her second language while raising two young children and battling cancer was no cakewalk, but through hard work, dedication and ongoing support from family, instructors and classmates Sandra persevered and graduated with her husband and children at her side. While this in itself was an amazing achievement, winning the President’s Award for Academic Excellence was the cherry on top.
Sandra would also like to give a huge shout out to the nursing class of 2021! It was a privilege to learn and grow with each and every one of you, and the nursing profession should be proud to welcome you into its ranks.
