Why has Russia always been 'the great other'? Against the background of Russian history from the 9th to 18th centuries, this course acquaints adult learners with the country's past, and how the Greek version of Christianity, and then coming under Mongol dominion for over two centuries, affected the Russian mindset. Rapid westernization in the 18th century only scaled down the differences with Europe, but it also exacerbated divisions in Russian society.
