Brandi Berry is the coordinator for the upcoming clean-up, which is focused on removing debris and garbage along the shoreline of the Puntledge River in Puntledge Park, located in the City of Courtenay. The event is set to take place on Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 1-4 pm.
The effort is part of Berry’s student leadership project and her commitment to cleaning up the environment and sharing her insights as a Cree woman.
“I have always been passionate about making climate change and the health of the Earth something that anyone can talk or learn about,” said Berry. “This work will help create a cleaner environment and I am hoping to provide some teachings about the Indigenous view of land to raise awareness and share knowledge. By coming together, we can make a healthier environment for generations to live, learn and play in.”
Those taking part in the event will meet at 1 pm in the parking lot in front of Puntledge Park, next to the utility building. Berry will provide buckets, garbage grabbers and gloves, but volunteers are encouraged to dress appropriately and bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.
