Project Summary

First Nations communities on Vancouver Island are working with North Island College nursing faculty and students to design an immersive learning experience in their communities. These experiences will reflect the uniqueness of each community and will serve to provide an opportunity for nursing students to live in and learn from a remote First Nations community.

Joanna Fraser
Joanna Fraser, RN BSN MCE EdD (c), Lead Researcher
Joanna is a nurse educator at North Island College. Her focus is curriculum reconciliation through inclusion of Indigenous people and ways of knowing. Her research interests include the use of indigenous and relational methodologies in understanding the healing and transformational possibilities of relational, land based and experiential learning.
Evelyn Voyageur
Evelyn Voyageur, PhD
Evelyn is of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation, of the Dzawadainox tribe. She speaks Kwak’wala fluently. She has worked in hospitals and communities in Alberta and BC, as well as taught and developed nursing curricula at UVic and NIC. Evelyn counsels survivors for the Indian Residential School Society. She has received many awards for her contribution to Aboriginal nursing, including becoming one of Health Canada’s First Nation and Inuit Branch’s first recipients of the Award of Excellence in Nursing.

Jocelyn Van Nest Kenney is the former Dean of Health, Human Services and Applied Business Technology at NIC. Her research interests include practice education models, emerging technologies in practice education, and inter-professional education.
