Academic Edge Tutoring

The Academic Edge Tutoring program provides a face-to-face, small group learning environment ideal for fostering individual progress and academic success.

Program Details

The summer 2020 tutoring program will focus on review of the key curriculum foundations learned in the 2019-20 school year, in preparation for academic success in the fall.

Lessons in the Academic Edge program will take place primarily outdoors. In the case of poor weather, classrooms will be utilized. Please view the information provided under "Need to Knows" for further program information. Students should register in the grade level correlating with the grade they most recently completed.

Fees per subject/grade: $192+tax

  • Each session is 3 weeks long
  • Two 2-hour sessions per week (12 hours total)
  • Subject and grade specific curriculum review
  • 4-6 students per group (same grade)
  • Same instructor for the duration of the session

Dates:

  • Session 1: July 13-30 – Registration opens June 8
  • Session 2: August 10-27 – Registration now open

Timetable:

Sessions run on a set timetable on either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday in time blocks of 9:00-11am or 11:30-1:30pm.

There are no sessions on Fridays.

The French Immersion program is focused on review of the foundational language elements and communication both written and verbal.

Need to Knows

NIC is committed to the Health and Safety of its campus community. For information on how we are keeping participants and staff in the Academic Edge program safe in light of the COVID19 pandemic, please read the document linked here.

Prior to the tutoring program start, participants will receive an email containing the appropriate forms required for participation. These forms are also linked below. Forms must be received by NIC no later than the beginning of the first lesson.

There are 3 documents that need to be received for each participant:

  1. Medical Emergency/Informed Consent
  2. COVID19 Health & Safety Acknowledgement
  3. Permission to Publish. This is an optional form, without your direct permission via this form, your child's photo will not be used for marketing purposes.

These forms can either be electronically submitted by email, or by printing, scanning and emailing to forms@nic.bc.ca.

Alternatively, forms can be printed off and brought with the participant at the first lesson.

**Please note that forms are required for participation. Please ensure your child's forms are completed in full on/before the first scheduled lesson**

If your child has a medical condition please be sure to indicate it on the medical forms and follow up with the Youth Outreach Liaison this way NIC can ensure your child has a safe and positive experience.

All Youth Academy programs are peanut/nut free environments. Youth will be asked not to bring peanut/nut snacks with them and any snacks provided will be peanut/nut free. Please be sure to communicate your child’s allergy and severity of the reaction on your forms. If your child carries an epi-pen or special medication please touch base directly with the Youth Outreach Liaison.

Academic Edge does not provide Education Assistants for tutoring sessions. If your child requires additional learning support please communicate directly with the Youth Outreach Liaison for further information.

There is no access to cafeteria or food related facilities at this time. Please plan meals and snacks accordingly by eating a big meal before coming to campus, bringing small peanut/nut free snacks, and your own drinks.

You can register online. Click on the subject of interest for a list of available sessions. Click on the session that relates to your child’s grade level and the desired start date to continue to online registration.

Online- Payment methods accepted are major credit card. You must pay at the time of registration to hold your spot.

At this time, there are no subsidies or bursaries in place, however please contact the Youth Outreach Liaison prior to registering to find out the most up to date information.

Two weeks prior to your tutoring session start day - full refund.

Inside two weeks, no refunds are provided. Please contact the Youth Outreach Liaison to find out about your options.

A link to the required forms will be provided via email to registered participants prior to the start date of your tutoring session. At this time, forms will also be available online at www.nic.bc.ca/youth-academy. If there is a delay in sending out forms, an update will be provided on the Youth Academy website.

Please come with your child to check in and sign out. The designated check in/out area is located outside of Puntledge Hall (see campus map here).

Please park in Lot B- There will be signage directing traffic to the free public lot.

Do not drop off in bus loops or staff parking.

If your child is unwell parent/guardians will be notified to pick the child up immediately.

If a child is unwell or injured and medical care is required, program staff will call first aid first, and then place a call to the parents.

Students are supervised at all times while they remain with the group. NIC is a closed campus for Youth Academy participants, meaning all campers are not allowed to leave campus alone.

Participants must be signed in and out at each lesson attended. When leaving campus for the day, youth must be signed out by an adult, or have alternative travel plans communicated on their program forms.

If for any reason your child will be late or absent, please communicate the circumstances to the lesson instructor or the Youth Outreach Liaison immediately. If a child is not accounted for and there is no communicated absence, the parent/guardians will be notified but ultimately it will be the parent/guardian's responsibility to follow up on the child’s whereabouts.

NIC fosters an environment of mutual respect. All Youth Academy participants and staff are members of the campus community during tutoring program hours and are expected to treat individuals, equipment and the spaces utilized for camp activities with the upmost respect. Participants are always required to follow safety rules and guidelines. Parents will be notified if behaviour is unsafe or inappropriate. The parent/guardian will be responsible for picking up the child should it be deemed necessary.

Youth Academy has a zero-tolerance policy in regards to behaviours such as bullying, harassment, discrimination, racism, and physical violence of any kind. This policy extends to illegal activities during lesson hours such as alcohol, drugs, smoking/vaping and theft. Parents will be notified, and the participant will be sent home without refund.

Parking and Drop off:

Please follow signage to Lot B for parking. Please do not use Bus Loops or Staff Parking areas for drop offs. All vehicle traffic should be contained to free public parking in Lot B (click here for campus map).

Check In:

A check in table will be setup in the immediate program area on the grass outside Puntledge Hall (click here for campus map). Please follow ground visuals for safe one way flow of foot traffic into the program area.

Parent/guardian’s must check their child in on the first day. If your child is travelling independently please follow up with Youth Outreach Liaison (ali.sandholm@nic.bc.ca).

Please do not drop students off more than 30 minutes before the start of their session.

Check Out and Pick Up:

Youth must be signed out by an adult at the end of each lesson attended.

There is a designated waiting area for youth waiting for rides.

If your child is travelling independently please follow up with Youth Outreach Liaison (ali.sandholm@nic.bc.ca).

PLEASE NOTE: NIC’s Comox Valley campus is closed to the general public. Parents/guardians are asked to restrict their presence to the immediate program areas outside Puntledge Hall and the designated indoor check in area of Puntledge Rm 104.  Please send only 1 person in with your child.

In the case of poor weather, lessons will take place in classrooms.

Check In Location:

On a declared “Rain Day” check in will take place in Puntledge Rm. 104, this is located just inside from the usual outdoor check in area (click here for campus map). A staff member will be there to direct you.

After check in, students will be connected with their tutor who will lead them to their classroom.

At the end of the lesson, students are required to check out at Puntledge Room 104 and await pickup.

  • Please bring your own notebook, pens, pencils, sharpener, calculator *Cellphones will not suffice as a calculator*
  • Wear weather appropriate clothing as lessons will be outside.
  • Small snacks (NUT/PEANUT FREE)
  • Waterbottle
  • Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
