Recent events in the United States, Canada and around the world have focused attention on societal issues of racism and inequality. Many people are experiencing anger and distress over the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, cases of anti-Asian racism and hate speech linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the death of Vancouver Island Tla-o-qui-aht community member Chantel Moore in New Brunswick.
As individuals, and as a college community, we must recognize and help to eradicate racism, discrimination and violence. We have a responsibility to see the systemic inequities many people face, to hear their voices and learn from our differences.
We can be proud that North Island College is an inclusive, respectful and caring community. Our core values extol diversity and equity, alongside student success and life-long learning. It is timely to note that NIC’s new strategic Plan20-25 will include a renewed commitment to implementing initiatives that create and celebrate our College as model for diversity, inclusion and equity.
However, there is still much to do. We all share a duty to speak up against discrimination and racism, and to treat each other with respect and kindness.
