Simon and Stanley will be speaking at NIC’s Comox Valley campus Tuesday, March 14, starting at 12 pm. Admission is free and everyone is invited.
“This an opportunity for the community to hear how these two artists develop and navigate a collaborative artistic practice,” said Sara Vipond, an artist and instructor in NIC’s fine arts programs.
Vida Simon’s work has been presented in galleries, hotel rooms, storefronts, theatres, rooftops, a former synagogue, an old horse stable and a century-old house on Fogo Island, Newfoundland. She recently completed a long duration residency in Quebec and will have a solo show in Germany in 2017.
“For me drawing is the most direct, fluid form to express my interests in visual storytelling, materiality and gesture,” Simon said. “I approach drawing as an embodied language, a process of excavation, a way of wandering and wondering.”
Jack Stanley is a writer, curator and arts administrator. His interest in institutional critique started in the ‘90s while studying at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Since then he has been preoccupied with the issue of place and the often-overlooked significance of context in the production and reception of artworks.
The Montreal-based artists will be on site at the Comox Valley Art Gallery for their exhibit, Carried Away, which runs March 10 to April 13. The collaboration is an evolving work that incorporates live drawing, performance and installation; Vida is the artist/drawer and Jack is the decision maker. They are also be artists in residence at the gallery this March.
NIC’s Winter 2017 Artist Talk Series takes place in the Stan Hagen Theatre at the Comox Valley campus. Upcoming series artists include the March 21 presentation by Calgary-based performance artist Rita Mckeough.
