Terms Used by the Registrar’s Division

Here are a few terms we use in the post-secondary system that you may find useful as a new or returning student. Don’t worry, there’s no test at the end! 😊

Add/Drop period: This is a timeframe in which you can add or drop a course in your timetable and receive a refund. After this, there is the Withdraw deadline where you can remove a course from your timetable and not incur academic penalties, but you will also not be eligible for a refund. Check for these Key Dates here.

Advising: Advisors can help you explore different options and can also share information about things like program planning and course selection.  They can help you with academic planning, explore financial aid options and make a university transfer plan.  Find out about the different ways advisors can support you here. Make an appointment to chat to an Advisor here.

Course vs Program: A course is an individual course such as ANT 150 which is different from a program such as the Web Design Fundamentals Certificate program. Explore courses and programs in the Academic Calendar.

Key Dates vs. Academic Calendar: Key dates are the deadlines you need to meet as an NIC student and can be found here. The Academic Calendar is an official source for NIC programs and courses and can include course descriptions, admission requirements, important dates, NIC policies and student services. Registrars get super excited when you know the difference between them.

Waitlists: When a course is full, you can place yourself on a waitlist. You are urged to attend classes to keep up with the material in case a place opens up. If a space becomes available, the person at the top of the list will be automatically registered and an email notification will be sent to their NIC email address. You can only join a course from a waitlist until a specific date (listed under Key Dates), after which all waitlists will be cleared. You can check Student Planner to view your course waitlist status.

Breaking the Closet Audiobook

Breaking the Closet is a collection of audio stories shared by North Island College community members who identify as 2SLGBTQ+.  The audiobook was created by fourth year BSN students with the goal to promote inclusion, visibility and empathy towards queer students on campus.  You can listen by logging in with your NIC credentials at https://library.nic.bc.ca/breakingthecloset
