NIC Credit for your McDonald’s Training

Your McDonalds Restaurant Management training transfers seamlessly to North Island College’s Bachelor of Business Administration, General Management Major.

With NIC’s Business Degree you will access:

  • Recognized credentials. Your NIC degree is recognized by employers and other post-secondary institutions throughout the province. Combined with your McDonald’s Management Training, you will be well-positioned for career growth.
  • International exchange opportunities. NIC students have taken part in student exchange programs in Germany, the US, Mexico, Poland and France.
  • Life-changing experiences. Combine your world-class McDonald’s training with paid international training experience at Disney Corporation. NIC is one of six Canadian post-secondary institutions to take part in Disney’s International Academic Exchange program.
  • Invaluable work experience. As a degree student, you’ll have the option of complementing your in-class studies with business-related paid employment through co-operative education. In addition, you’ll take several courses that apply concepts from your studies to real workplace problems.

How it works

North Island College will grant transfer credit for successful completion of McDonald's Management Development Program Levels 1 – 4 (MDP1, MDP2, MDP3 and MDP4) to all applicants who meet NIC’s admission requirements (Eng 12 C+, Math (Foundations 11 C+, Principles 11 C, Applications 12 C, or Pre-Calculus 11 C).

How to apply

Step 1: Apply online at or talk to an NIC educational advisor if you have questions.

Step 2. Submit the following supporting documents to NIC:

  • McDonald’s Canada Training Verification form (signed by your McDonald’s Regional Training Manager to verify that training has been completed within three years of application).
  • Additional post-secondary transcripts to verify that you meet NIC’s admission requirements.

Step 3. Once you’ve met all the admission requirements, you will be offered a seat in NIC’s Bachelor of Business Administration program. Next you’ll pay a tuition deposit and will be invited to register for classes.

 NIC Student Artwork on Display at Lewis Centre

Explore ‘The Act of Painting’ with NIC fine art and design students at the Courtenay Lewis Centre.

The exhibit showcases the work of five emerging artists who have studied painting at NIC’s School of Fine Art and Design.

“These students and their works are remarkable,” says NIC instructor Elizabeth Russell. “The School of Fine Art and Design wants to thank Carol Millar and all the Lewis Centre staff for supporting emerging artists.”

The exhibit displays an eclectic range of thematic concerns, styles and techniques as each artist finds their unique voice through the act of painting. It includes:

  • Theo Papanikolaou, a Fine Arts diploma student from Alberta, whose expressive paintings “splatter brain” and “into the void” explore the genres of photo realism and abstraction.
  • Leslie Wynne, an artist and NIC Bachelor of Nursing degree student, whose representational paintings of “Mr. Bob” and “The Salon” express her ability to capture the humanity she experiences in everyday encounters with people in her life.
  • Mike Hilland, an NIC Fine Arts diploma alumni and a talented musician, whose magical and haunting surreal scenes in paintings fluctuate from real life to dream states.
  • Lesley-Anne Watts, an artist and NIC English Instructor, whose vibrant and lyrical works such as “The Troubles meet Jazz” reference her connections to Ireland and her interest in abstraction and craft practices.
  • Suzanne Slattery, a multi-talented Design and Fine Arts diploma student, whose sultry portrait, “Supery Sailor” is a bold abstract work rich in technique and spirit.

The exhibit is free and available to view daily during Lewis Centre’s operating hours.

NIC School of Fine Art and Design offers courses in digital media, design, printmaking, sculpture, drawing, photography, ceramics and art history. Students interested in learning to paint or advancing their skills and talents in art and design can take individual courses or register in the Fine Arts diploma.

NIC's Global Leaders of Tomorrow program is a great opportunity for students to receive mentorship, increase knowledge and learn networking skills.

Grip Film Training

Learn how to configure camera and lighting equipment to get the perfect shot, understand industry protocols and execute professional shots. This program is well suited to individuals who enjoy hard work, have a technical aptitude and desire to work in the creative industries.

Carpentry and Set Construction Training

Learn about the materials and requirements to design, build and take down sets. This training is well suited to individuals who have completed the Carpentry Foundation program and who are ready to diversify their careers.

Autumn Harvest Dinner at NIC's Third Course Bistro

Join us for a special buffet dinner hosted by NIC Tourism & Hospitality Management students. Comox Valley ElderCollege Lecture Series:
Food Security, Public Policy and the Site C Dam

Join Comox Valley ElderCollege for the third of eight lectures in the 2017 Food For Thought Lecture Series, Food Security, Public Policy and the Site C Dam with Wendy Holm. 
Wendy Holm is an award winning Canadian agrologist, columnist, author and speaker. She holds 10 national journalism awards, as well as two Queen's Medals for Contribution to Community. Why does Site C Dam have her
interest and what does it have to do with food?
The rich alluvial soil and class one climate make this some of the most important agricultural land in Canada. Can the fruit and vegetables imported from water-scarce California be grown here? Is Site C right where it needs to be for continental water sharing plans to bring northern water east of the Rockies to the parched Midwest? Wendy Holm, Agrologist of the year in 2000 and Distinguished Alumna of UBC, will address these questions.

Barriers to Balance provides employment training

Gain the skills to work in an office environment.

  • Learn bookkeeping, office procedures and an introduction to Word and Excel.
  • Receive active job search support, career and job readiness training.
  • At the end of the program you will have an opportunity to receive mentorship with a local employer.

Info Session: Free Prep Cook Certificate at NIC's Campbell River Campus*

NIC's Prep Cook Certificate is designed to introduce you to the basic skills, safety knowledge and job readiness to launch a career in the food services industry. The program consists of four months of hands-on training, including industry certifications in Occupational First Aid, FoodSafe and WHMIS. Program starts December 4, 2017.

Go Global with NIC - International Education Week Photography Contest

Submit a photo and 150 words representing the theme, Go Global with NIC by the deadline of 11:59 pm on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 and you could win $1,000* toward NIC study abroad experience. Runners up win $500* and $250.*

*Prize winners also have the option of choosing an NIC tuition credit or $500, $250 and $125 respectively.

Full Contest Guidelines

This year’s theme, Go Global with NIC, promotes a mindset and attitude that takes NIC out into the world and brings the world to NIC. The theme is meant to include an element of fun and adventure, while promoting global citizenship as a college-wide conversation. Contest entries should incorporate an international or global element and should demonstrate how internationalization abroad, in-community or on campus cultivates curiosity, respect and tolerance for difference.

Submission eligibility:

  • This contest is open to all current NIC students in any program and at all campuses.
  • This contest is not open to current NIC employees.
  • Joint entries are not accepted (only one student’s name can appear on the submission form).
  • Maximum two entries per student. A separate contest form must be used for each entry.

How to enter:

Using the official submission form to submit a photo and 150 words that represent the theme “Go Global with NIC”.

  • Email the completed submission form AND photo to
  • If your photo file is too large for email, you can bring your photo on a USB flash drive to the Office of Global Engagement at the Comox Valley campus or contact
  • Incomplete entries will not be considered.
  • Be creative and have fun! See the judging criteria for more information.

Judging Criteria:

Winning submissions will:

  • clearly demonstrate a connection to the theme Go Global with NIC;
  • be tasteful and respectful;
  • demonstrate a clear link between the write-up and the photo; and
  • tell a story through photography.

Judges will give points for composition and creativity.


First Prize - $1,000 toward an NIC study abroad experience (or chose a $500 tuition waiver).

Second Prize - $500 toward an NIC study abroad experience (or choose a $250 tuition waiver).

Third Prize - $250 toward an NIC study abroad experience (or choose a $125 tuition waiver).

Prizes will be applied directly either to an NIC study abroad experience or to an upcoming term’s tuition. There is no option for a prize to be paid out in cash.

Contest winners will be announced on Thursday, November 23.

Lorimer Shenher Reads at NIC Write Here Readers Series Event

Lorimer Shenher is the author of That Lonely Section of Hell, which was one of the Globe and Mail's 100 Best Books of 2015. He was the first detective in the Vancouver Police Department assigned to Vancouver's Missing and Murdered Women Investigation. Today, he is a writer, public speaker, and advocate for marginalized people and police reform.

Dr. Sheri Price is a nurse researcher with over 20 years of nursing experience in a variety of practice areas/settings.

As NIC’s 2017 Visiting Scholar, Dr. Price will provide an overview of how her research on millennial nursing students, new graduates and mid-late career nurses provides great insight into the influence nurses have throughout their careers on patient care, the nursing profession and health system as a whole.

Run to Quit starts January 2018

Run to Quit is an innovative program that pairs the quit smoking expertise of the Canadian Cancer Society with the Running Room’s learn to walk/run 5 km clinics. Participants are supported by a Quit Coach through a gradual 10-week walk/run program in combination with evidence-based smoking cessation strategies, such as exercise and group support.

Run to Quit is suitable for non-runners and people with any level of fitness. Non-smokers are invited to join at half price to support someone who is participating in the program.

Run to Quit participants are 7x more likely to successfully quit smoking than those who try to quit cold turkey. Exercise reduces cravings, helps manage withdrawal symptoms and inspires people to be healthier. By choosing to champion Run to Quit you are helping people access proven quit smoking resources.
