Silver Jewellery Express I

This 2-day course is an introduction to the creative and fun world of jewellery making for beginners. It has been specifically designed for students with no previous metal working experience. You will learn all the techniques needed to create your own beautifully finished band ring and one-of-a-kind pendant. Through demonstrations and hands-on practice you will learn various basic techniques such as piercing, filing, soldering, annealing, sanding, polishing, texturing and fabrication. A focus will be on safe studio and equipment practices. We will demonstrate all the steps needed to complete each piece as well as provide handouts with all the details for your reference. By the end of this course you will be able to take home two new pieces of jewellery you will be proud to wear or share. Note: The cost of materials for the two projects are included in the tuition. Please check the supply list online for additional items you need to bring from home. There will be a few templates for designs for those who don't want to design their own. Extra material will be available for an added cost.

Silver Jewellery Express II

In this fast-paced and exciting workshop, a continuation of Silver Jewellery Express I, you will be creating two more sterling silver projects. Learn new techniques such as advanced fabrication and soldering, creating a tube setting for a ring and setting the stone with accuracy. We will be adding texture by introducing surface ornamentation techniques using our studio stamps and hammers, fusing with metal, and coloring with patinas. Advance your skills and reignite your creative process in a creative group atmosphere. Note: Materials are provided and included in the price. Metal Jewellery Design Info Session

This free information session will give prospective students the opportunity to meet instructors and learn about the 8-month Metal Jewellery Design Certificate as well as the evening, weekend and summer jewellery workshops available at NIC. Tour the well-equipped studio, discover more about the field of jewellery making and design, learn about jewellery-making equipment and tools, and see what past students have accomplished. There is no cost to attend but we ask that you please pre-register.

Silver Wire Work Essentials

Unleash your creativity! Using three simple hand tools, discover the basics of working with sterling silver wire to create your own beautiful jewellery. Learn techniques to make essential jewellery components such as ear wires, connectors, wrapped beads, clasps, head pins, jump rings and chain. Using semi-precious beads, you will assemble the components to take home three pairs of earrings; a bracelet and a wire ring. Note: Materials are provided and included in the price. Stone Setting II

Create two jewellery pieces in two days, one with a four-claw prong setting and one with a tube-style setting, both with faceted stones. This fast-paced workshop is for those who have had some experience with fabrication or have completed NIC's beginner jewellery course or equivalent. There will be some freedom with project selection as we will offer two choices for each type of setting. Note: Materials are provided and included in the price. Torch Techniques

This intermediate class will focus on advanced torch and stone setting techniques. Each student will be guided through the steps to create a reticulated pendant and then embellish their design with a claw or tube set stone. The second project will be an advanced wire work project which will require more detailed instruction to help each student with the complexity of finer soldering. Students need to have previous soldering experience and it is recommended that they have taken a beginner's level metal jewellery workshop in advance of taking this course.
