NIC’s virtual 2021 Artist Talk series will wrap up March 17 with award-winning artist and academic Sean Caulfield.

Caulfield, a centennial professor in the University of Alberta’s Department of Art and Design, has exhibited prints, drawings installations and artist’s books extensively throughout Canada, the US, Europe and Japan.

His work has also featured in prominent public and private collections, including Houghton Library at Harvard University, the Fitzwilliam Museum at the University of Cambridge and the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas.

In 2017, Caulfield was elected to the Arts Division of the Academy of the Arts and Humanities of the Royal Society of Canada.

“I can think of no better guest to close out our Winter 2021 series than Prof. Caulfield,” said Sara Vipond, NIC School of Fine Art + Design department chair. “His voice is deservedly respected in the art world in Canada and beyond and we’re thrilled he will be joining us.”

The NIC Artist Talk series moved from an in-person event to a fully virtual format in January, partly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. But shifting the event online also allowed people from outside the Comox Valley region the chance to attend, thanks to the increased flexibility in dates and times. Vipond said attendance reached new heights, with viewers from Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Victoria and as far away as Nepal tuning in hear artists share insights into their professional art practices.

The new format also widened the doors to more artists to participate in the series, Vipond said. The response has been so positive, the fall 2021 Artist Talk series will also be offered online, she added.

“We’re really pleased to see how diverse the reach of this series has been and we’re looking forward to growing our audience when the Artist Talk series returns later this year,” Vipond said.

Until then, it’s not too late to reserve your free online ticket to see Sean Caulfield speak on March 17 at 1 pm via Zoom. Everyone is welcome. To attend, visit: https://nicart.tickit.ca.

Previous speakers for the winter 2021 series were: Jim Holyoak, Sonny Assu, Justin Love, Kristin Nelson, Sandra Meigs and Scott Amos.
