NIC kicks off college year Sep. 17 at Mixalakwila campus

The Port Hardy campus was gifted the Kwak’wala name Mixalakwila, meaning `maker of what’s been dreamt about’. The campus will celebrate the start of a new academic year on Sep. 17 from 11:30 am - 2:30 pm.

New and returning students are invited to NIC’s Mixalakwila campus on Tuesday, Sept. 17 for Orientation Day.

“Orientation Day is meant to be fun and informative,” said Donna Merry, Mixalakwila campus coordinator. “Students have a chance to meet their peers, faculty and NIC staff and learn about the services and supports available to them at the College.”

NIC’s campus in Port Hardy offers adult basic education, university transfer courses, early childcare and education and tourism & hospitality programs.

This year also marks two new offerings at Mixalakwila: the Early Childhood Care and Education diploma will be delivered face-to-face, starting this fall and the Health Care Assistant program begins in January.

Orientation Day begins at 11:30 am in the campus library, followed by a traditional welcome and greeting in the student lounge. A free lunch is served at 12 pm.

The afternoon consists of a marketplace where students can learn about NIC services and various community resources. Some community organizations attending include the North Vancouver Island Aboriginal Training Society, the Sacred Wolf Friendship Centre, the Mount Waddington Food Initiative, Building Blocks and Community Futures.

“Many of the students like the chance to get to know each other and NIC faculty and staff outside of the classroom,” said Merry. “By introducing everyone to NIC services and the community resources, we are equipping students with tools that can help them enjoy success at the College.”

Community members interested in attending NIC are encouraged to attend to learn more about the courses and programs available. Visit www.nic.bc.ca to apply or call 1-800-715-0914 to speak with an educational advisor.
