Career possibilities: Graduates will qualify for entry level custodial positions with a wide range of businesses and organizations, from school districts and hospitals to hotels, offices, and industrial settings.

In just four weeks, you can learn to provide quality building custodial services and qualify for entry-level custodial positions in school districts, hospitals, other institutions, hotels, offices, and industrial settings.Training is designed for individuals with limited experience, who have a desire to work in the field and gain the fundamental skills to pursue entry level positions in the industry.

This all-inclusive program includes the following education, training, and certification:

Foundation Skills Training
This course combines classroom instruction, computer lab time, and field trips, and will include lecture, group work and guest speakers. Through class activities and assignments, participants will learn about the building service industry and employer expectations, develop Essential Skills for employment in the industry, and assess their own skills and aptitude for this field.

Participants will become familiar with WHMIS, a hazard communication system that provides information on the safe use of hazardous materials in the workplace. On successful completion, participants will be awarded WHMIS certification.

Occupational First Aid – Level 1
Participants will learn life-saving first aid skills, meeting the requirements for OFA Level 1 certification.

Building Service Worker – Level 1
This is an introduction to the skills required to work in the building service custodial field. Topics include: attitudes, ground rules, WHMIS, blood borne pathogen safety, hanta virus awareness, basic cleaning chemistry, cleaning procedures overview, interior office cleaning, restroom cleaning, daily floor maintenance, and classroom cleaning.

Building Service Worker – Level 2: Hard Floor Care
Students will learn correct care and maintenance procedures for virtually all types of resilient and hard surface flooring, and proper use of equipment.

Building Service Worker – Level 3: Carpet Care
Students will gain an understanding of the objectives of commercial carpet cleaning. Topics include: terminology, safety, common chemicals, products and equipment, and cleaning techniques and procedures.

Building Service Worker – Practicum
This is an instructor-led practicum, providing students with hands-on practical training in the skills and application of theory and principles for the performance of duties as a building service worker.

Transition to Employment Training
Participants will gain skills and tools to make a successful transition to employment - preparing an effective resume for the building service industry and developing job search skills, tools and resources.

Admission Requirements

This Employment Skills Access (ESA) program is designed to assist unemployed or low-skilled individuals to gain employment. All tuition and books are included for participants who meet the specific ESA eligibility criteria.
You may be eligible if you are:
  • Unemployed AND not collecting Employment Insurance (EI) AND have not been associated with a regular EI claim the past three years or maternity/parental claim in the past five years.

Completion Requirements

Participants must successfully complete 80% of the coursework to receive their NIC Certificate of Completion.
