Introduction to Aquaculture

This course will put regional aquaculture into a global context. The importance of aquaculture in addressing growing seafood security issues will be outlined and the production approaches and future trends for this industry sector discussed. As an overeview course we will examine various aquaculture production approaches with a focus on those of other regions - tropical, marine, freshwater, etc. A regular component of this course will be a review and discussion of current events, developments and innovations as they relate to aquaculture.

Invertebrate & Seaweed Husbandry

This course provides an overview of the production approaches used in the shellfish aquaculture sector. Topics include seed transport, juvenile rearing systems (e.g., FLUPSY design and function), production systems (raft, longlines, beach), containment structures (nets, trays), farm siting, production planning, growing water and product quality monitoring and husbandry protocols such as grading, tumbling, beach hardening, predator protection, and gear fouling management. System maintenance, including anchoring, materials use/life cycle, and other Standard Operating Protocols (SOP's) will be reviewed. New innovations under development in the sector will also be discussed.

AQT-110

Finfish Husbandry

This course provides an overview of the production approaches used in the finfish aquaculture sector. Following a review of the various production systems used for fish production and the environmental conditions appropriate for farm siting, topics associated with farm operations will include anchoring requirements, net management (deployment, maintenance), feeding systems and protocols, production planning, mort retrieval and diagnostics, disease treatments, stocking density, grading, weight samples, harvest procedures, fish transport, and fish processing.

Aquaculture Health & Safety

Students will be introduced to the specifics of aquaculture safe workplace practices and systems. The purpose and correct methodology behind hazard recognition and emergency preparedness will be explored as well as information relating to personal protective equipment requirements and specifications.

Strategies for Success

Students will participate in applied skills training to prepare to secure work in the aquaculture industry. The principles of leadership, dealing with conflict, workplace respect principles, and working cooperatively in a culturally diverse industry will be introduced. Common computer software will be introduced and practiced with hands-on skills training.

Field School 1

60 hours

This course will provide each student with the opportunity to apply their learning at a working farm site. Students will engage in daily farm activities at industry finfish sites, acquiring practical knowledge of farm operations, applying the skill sets developed in class to date, and realizing employer expectations.
