Join NIC’s Global Learning Initiative Thursday, October 18 for a screening of the acclaimed documentary Bag It.

Bag It follows Colorado resident Jeb Berrier as he asks the question: What happens to all the plastic we throw away? And what happens when it all catches up to us?

The 78-minute documentary focuses on the environmental impact of everything from grocery bags to baby bottles and has won a host of awards, including ‘Best Documentary’ at the Durango Independent Film Festival, ‘Audience Choice Award’ at the Reel Earth Environmental Film Festival and the Port Townsend Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Helen Boyd, coordinator of  Comox Valley Nurses for Health and the Environment. Boyd, a registered nurse, has started a campaign to ban plastic bags in the Comox Valley.

The evening is hosted by NIC's Global Learning Initiative, a student-driven project which fosters awareness of global issues through partnerships with local communities and individuals.

“With municipalities across BC calling for a plastic bag ban, it’s important to raise awareness about the impacts of plastics on our environment, especially as we near municipal elections later this fall,” said nursing student and event organizer Paula Branchi. “We’re pleased to host this screening and encourage everyone to attend.”

The initiative supports students’ experiences in remote communities in Uganda, Nepal and Mozambique and continues to strengthen cultural understandings through field schools to Aboriginal and global communities.

The screening starts at 6:30 pm in the Stan Hagen Theatre at NIC’s Comox Valley campus, followed by the Q&A. Doors open at 6 pm. Admission is by donation to the Global Learning Initiative. Fair trade coffee and chocolate are also available for purchase at the event.
