Access myNIC and Email - International Students

Once you receive your letter of offer, it is time for you to start checking your myNIC account and NIC email inbox. All of the future communication from NIC will be sent to your NIC email address moving forward.

Failing to log into your myNIC account and NIC email inbox will result in missing important documents and information regarding your enrolment.

Your myNIC account and NIC email inbox

Your letter of offer includes the important information regarding your new NIC email address and how to access it. All future communications from NIC, including your letter of acceptance, will be sent through ‘myNIC’ - your personal NIC information portal. You must check your myNIC account regularly.

When logging into myNIC for the first time, we recommend that you use a desktop or laptop to sign in.

To log into myNIC, go to nic.bc.ca and click on the ‘myNIC Login’ button at the top of the page. Your login information includes your myNIC user ID and your temporary password that were included in your letter of offer.

Once you log into your myNIC account, you now need to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). A message “More Information is Required” will pop up and ask you to register for MFA.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

NIC is deploying Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). MFA is considered a cybersecurity best practice and is widely used in colleges and universities worldwide to protect users and information systems. This extra layer of security will significantly increase the protection of student accounts, personal data and NIC’s information systems.

What is Multi-Factor Authentication?

This is a two-step process to validate the account accessing NIC resources. An additional layer of protection that is simple to use combines your NIC username/password with something only you have access to like an SMS text, a phone call to a landline, or the Microsoft Authenticator app which can be downloaded to your mobile device from Google Play or Apple Store. MFA is becoming standard practice for institutions including banks, government, and colleges. If your password is compromised, your account will still be secured as the attacker will not have the additional factor required to log in.

How will MFA work at NIC?

MFA will only be required when accessing NIC services off-campus.

It registers the device (laptop, cell phone) to prevent unauthorized devices from trying to access our network.

When you log in to your NIC account off-campus, you will receive a notification asking you to confirm your log-in through one of the available methods:

  • The Microsoft Authenticator mobile app (strongly recommended for international students)
  • An SMS text message (not recommended)
  • An automated voice call to a phone number of your choosing (not recommended)

Self-Service Password Reset NIC

Self Service Password Reset can only be used after MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) is set up. DO NOT attempt this if MFA is not set up.

Update your Address, Phone Number and Email Address

  1. Log into myNIC, click on “mySelf-Service” (a blue box says “Access Self-Service).
  2. In mySelf-Service, click on ‘User Options’ then click on ‘User Profile’ in the pull-down menu.
