Comox Valley ElderCollege History
In September 1999 two Comox Valley community members, Betty Emery and Elizabeth Smith, learned of the concept of ElderCollege. Inspired by the possibility of having a life-long learning organization in the Comox Valley, they took their vision to North Island College. The College president immediately embraced the idea and agreed to support the suggestion with classroom accommodation and assistance with registration.
Starting with 100 enthusiastic community members and volunteers, CVEC now has over 800 members aged 55+ years. CVEC is still based on NIC’s Courtenay campus and is a self-funding College program under Continuing Education and Training. It continues to be run completely by volunteers.
In 2017 CVEC celebrated Canada’s sesquicentennial by naming its two North Island College Foundation bursaries after the founders of the Comox Valley ElderCollege – The Betty Emery Founder’s Bursary and The Elizabeth Smith Founders Bursary.
