NIC is offering Carpentry Foundation training in Port Alberni for the Winter 2018 term. The Harmonized certificate allows students to develop essential skills while earning credit toward their Interprovincial (Red Seal).

The decision to offer the training in Port Alberni was based on feedback from local industry.

“We heard from local leaders that there is a demand for skilled carpenters,” said Cheryl O’Connell, Dean of Trades and Technical Programs at NIC. “We want to ensure we’re offering responsive programming that meets the needs of Vancouver Island communities and we’re pleased to be able to offer Carpentry Foundation in Port Alberni starting in January.”

Through the 24-week Carpentry Foundation Harmonized certificate, students will learn residential framing, footing and wall forming, site layout, work site safety and more.

“The foundation program provides the fundamental knowledge that apprentices need to be prepared to work in the industry,” said O’Connell. “It’s also the first step toward earning your Red Seal designation, which is the interprovincial standard of excellence in the skilled trades.”

According to the BC Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training, almost 110,000 trades jobs are expected to open up in BC by 2025.

Applications are now being accepted for the January start.
