While exploring different subjects at NIC, Teichrib discovered the opportunity to study abroad in Japan, which turned out to be a life-changing decision.
“I was only supposed to stay for a semester, but two days in, I decided to stay for a year,” Teichrib said.
It was through his time in Japan that Teichrib changed the direction of his studies.
“When I was in Japan I was able to focus on what I really wanted to do, what I would enjoy doing – that led me to choose to become an English teacher.”
Teichrib transferred to UBC, where he is currently studying English and languages, with a minor in Asian Studies. He says aside from earning credits, networking was one of the highlights of the trip.
“I was able to meet students and teachers from around the globe,” he said. “Making those strong connections will be really helpful in the future.”
Along with his studies, Teichrib took advantage of opportunities to volunteer in the community.
“I was able to volunteer at different schools, orphanages and at some festivals,” he said. “It really helped me integrate into the culture and meet members of the community.”
Teichrib would encourage anyone to look into the study abroad opportunities available at NIC. “You learn a lot about yourself when you’re in another country when you don’t know the language and don’t know the culture,” he said. “It’s really eye-opening and promotes a lot of self-growth.”
