CTLI: Where technology meets the classroom
Play audio:
Since 2020, the Centre for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI) has provided four areas of support for North Island College instructors to create a vibrant educational community:
- Integration and appropriate use of learning technologies and online course design
- Teaching and learning practices and pedagogies
- Program review and quality assurance activities
- Evidence-gathering and scholarly teaching activities to advance practice

Our students deserve engaging, robust learning experiences — and we're committed to evidence-based practices to ensure our programs meet the highest possible standards.
For years, the college supported faculty development through a teach and learning committee that organized keynote speakers, workshops and other learning opportunities. In January 2020 though, the work took a more formal shape with the launch of CTLI, which officially opened with three staff members and a director.
During the pandemic, the CTLI team supported instructors, especially with digital instruction. Early on, the centre trained faculty on using platforms such as Blue Jeans, Kaltura and Brightspace.
More recently, the centre has prioritized supporting academic quality enhancement so that programs and courses stay relevant and timely with new processes, policies and curriculum procedures and learning outcomes.
Today, the CTLI team continues to focus on teaching and learning innovation, as well as academic quality enhancement through means like the Teach Anywhere website.
In 2024–2025, CTLI focused on several key priorities including enhancing the practices of instructors and advancing quality learning at NIC. Adding to that was the development of a learning institutional plan called The Roadmap for Quality. The team also worked through action items from the Quality Assurance Process Audit (QAPA) and began exploring the implications of generative AI through new guidelines and learning experiences.
This attention to innovation and excellence helps NIC deliver on its commitment to
building healthy and thriving communities one student at a time. As we celebrate 50
years of learning, CTLI’s ongoing commitment to innovation and quality reflects the
college’s enduring promise to adapt and lead in education, ensuring every student
is supported in a rapidly changing world.
