Overview
The Human Services Diploma lets you explore careers in community support, education, social services or behavior intervention, with opportunities shaped by your courses and practicum. Complete the Human Services Certificate in year one and build on it in year two, studying full- or part-time from September to June. NIC offers a transferable education through a provincial network including VIU and UVic. Consult an advisor to ensure elective transferability for further studies.
You'll learn:
- Courses include human and social services, criminology, sociology, psychology, women’s studies, First Nations studies and equity and social justice
- Weekly seminars connect theory to practice, while placements align with your career goals locally or internationally
- Practicums provide hands-on experience supporting individuals and families facing challenges like violence, addiction or mental health issues

Practicum
Practicum opportunities are key to the program, helping you integrate theory with practical experience while working with vulnerable populations. You’ll receive mentorship from industry leaders and guidance as you work directly with vulnerable populations. You must arrange your own transportation and assume related costs.Careers
The Human Services Diploma prepares you for agency roles requiring two years of training. Some examples of workplaces include community-based support services, group homes, treatment centers, shelters or correctional facilities. Examples of roles include social work assistant, child and youth care worker, education assistant, community support worker or outreach worker.
