A new partnership NIC has with Selkirk College and Northern Lights College is garnering media attention in different parts of the province.

The new program is for Mental Health and Substance Use Training (MHSU) students. Selkirk is delivering the course remotely, which allows students from the three colleges’ own communities to study and get work experience through a five-week practicum close to home.

“This provides access for them to learn from home in rural communities," says Jan Meiers, dean, faculty of Health and Human Services at North Island College on Vancouver Island. "It is especially suited to students who cannot attend a large campus. Through this collaboration, the program is helping to build rural workforce capacity to support people with mental health and substance use challenges across British Columbia.”

So far, the collaboration has received news coverage in some Interior communities, as well as in the Comox Valley Record and on post-secondary news sites like Academica. There is more information on Selkirk College’s news page.
