Turn your passion into a profession with this diploma. Gain social justice insights to support individuals, families and communities through partnerships, research and practicums, building best practices and a professional network. NIC offers a transferable education through a provincial network including VIU and UVic. Consult an advisor for elective transferability.

You'll learn:
  • First year: focus on interpersonal communication, social work practice and social policy through an anti-oppressive feminist lens, with electives in sociology, psychology, criminology and women’s studies.
  • Second year: specialized courses in family dynamics, mental health, addictions, conflict resolution and community development.
  • Weekly seminars connect learning to practice, preparing you for roles in agencies addressing addiction, violence and mental health challenges.

Practicum

Practicum opportunities are key to the program, helping you integrate theory with practical experience while working with vulnerable populations. You’ll receive mentorship from industry leaders and guidance as you work directly with vulnerable populations. You must arrange your own transportation and assume related costs.

Careers

As a graduate, you’ll be prepared to support individuals with financial assistance, family support, employment, life skills and more. Potential roles include family support worker, outreach worker, transition house counselor, employment counselor, addictions support worker, youth worker, community development worker, crisis intervention counselor and mental health worker.
