Overview
In this building maintenance program, you'll master a wide range of skills to perform duties in alignment with building codes and bylaws. You'll gain hands-on experience in various tasks, from maintaining plumbing fixtures and electrical systems to working with wood, concrete and roofing materials.
You’ll learn:
- Maintaining and repairing piping, plumbing, electrical appliances and outlets
- Laying out, measuring, cutting and assembling wood and working with concrete
- Maintaining, repairing, or removing gutters, roofing systems, insulation and more
- Interpreting blueprints and understanding building codes and bylaws
- Gaining certifications like Level One Occupational First Aid, WHMIS, confined space training and fire safety
- Using safety equipment such as ladders, scaffolding and platforms
- Strengthening math skills, including metric and imperial conversions and basic geometry
- Working with carpentry, drywall, shop tools and measuring devices
- Performing repairs on stairs, decks, roofs, windows and drywall
- Developing strong interpersonal skills for working with homeowners and tenants
