Peru
February 2024
In partnership with North Island College, Aurora College, Northern Lights College, and Coast Mountain College, Yukon University led a field study course in Peru to do a solar installation in an indigenous community. Students from the electrical foundation program at NIC worked with the Alberta-based NGO: Light Up the World to learn about solar energy in remote communities during a 10-day trip.
The students participated in workshops to learn about off-grid solar energy and did a solar installation on an elementary school in the remote community of Santa Rosa de Llillinta. This provided electricity and satellite internet to power lights, computers and other devices to improve education and community well-being. It allows for 24/7 satellite internet access. This aims to reverse trends of children leaving the community for schooling due to a lack of basic services.
Throughout the course, students were exposed to Indigenous ways of knowing from a uniquely Peruvian perspective.
