Jordan
May/June 2023
This field school was a joint venture between NIC and Wilfred Laurier University (WLU). Students spent three weeks contributing to the Khirbat al-Mukhayyat Archaeological Project (also called the Town of Nebo Archaeological Project). This is a multidisciplinary research project which investigated the importance of trade, religion and landscape for ancient societies.
Description:
Khirbat al-Mukhayyat is located six kilometres northwest of the City of Madaba, an ancient town in Jordan that is southwest of the capital Amman. Madaba is famous for its 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George.
Students at WLU have participated in this archaeological field school for over 15 years. NIC students can now join them.
NIC instructor Dr. Jenny Botica has worked with Dr. Debra Foran in Jordan at both Tell Madaba and Khirbat al-Mukhayyat. The 2023 season was the first of what aims to be a multi-year collaboration with the WLU team. Students contributed to the realization of the research goals of the Town of Nebo Archaeological Project. They explored public archaeology and heritage tourism opportunities associated with the project.
