For the first time in its history, the North Island College Foundation (NICF) will distribute more than one million dollars in student awards this year. So far, over $650,000 has already been given out, with additional funding expected in the months ahead.
The ripple effect of NICF’s award program helps students manage costs like tuition, rent and other financial challenges, allowing them to focus on their education and future success. In doing so, the Foundation continues to deliver on North Island College’s (NIC) brand promise: Together, we make waves.
"Thanks to my award, I’ve been able to fully commit to my studies while embracing this exciting transition into Early Childhood Education,” said Robyn, a student in NIC’s Early Childhood Care & Education – Infant and Toddler Diploma program. Robyn, who left an established career to pursue her education at NIC, is excited to see where her new path will take her.
“Leaving a career in food services to nurture young minds was a huge leap, but this award has made me feel encouraged and supported by my community.”
By providing more than 500 awards, 24 of which are Indigenous focused, the Foundation is supporting hundreds of students. The average award is $1,500, offering essential support at a time when the rising cost of living can make completing a program challenging. For many students, these awards are a crucial factor in reaching graduation.
The student award program is made possible thanks to donors, including alumni and community members. Shannon Baikie, Acting Chair of the NIC Foundation, says the generosity of these donors has a lasting impact on both students and the wider community.
“Every donor carries a unique story, a personal reason for giving that pulses with purpose,” Baikie said. “Through their generosity, NIC students are equipped to pursue an education that transforms not only their lives but the communities around them.”
Baikie adds that the awards are meaningful not just for students, but for the communities the college serves.
This year’s award total reflects both the generosity of donors and strong returns on NICF’s endowment investments. Tied to global financial markets, the endowments performed well, allowing the Foundation to support students in an unprecedented way. While this level of funding is exceptional, it may vary in the future depending on market performance and donations.
“For 34 years, the NIC Foundation has helped thousands of students pursue their dreams and transform lives, year after year. This is achieved through the steadfast commitment of its team, who tirelessly strive to support as many students as possible,” said Baikie.
Looking ahead, the Foundation remains committed to supporting NIC students and making a lasting impact on the communities the college serves.
