Counselling
It’s OK to need help. If you’re a registered student, you can access free, professional and confidential support from NIC counsellors when you need it.
How we can help
As well as personal counselling, we also offer:
- Crisis intervention
- Academic success coaching
- Sexual violence support
- Referrals to supports outside the college
- Workshops to promote well-being, resilience and study skills
Counselling sessions are offered online, in-person or by phone.
You can also book an appointment by contacting Student Services.
Confidentiality
A student’s sessions will remain confidential unless we have their written permission to release the information or unless one of the following exceptions apply:
- There are known or suspected instances of children who need protection
- Vulnerable adults are at risk of abuse or neglect and are unable to seek help on their own
- There is imminent risk to the person receiving counselling or to another person
- A court has ordered the release of a student’s information
If there is immediate risk of harm to yourself or others, call 911.
If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts and counselling services are not immediately available, call the Vancouver Island Crisis Line at 1-888-494-3888.
Community and crisis resources are also available 24-7.
A note on services
In accordance with BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, NIC provides counselling to all current NIC students physically located in BC. Single-session* or appointment-based counselling services will be available to NIC students located outside the province.
*Single-session means students can book more than one appointment, but each session is considered distinct and the same counsellor may not always be available.
